(TV) Various musings

I've always been intrigued to hear what Neil Young was going to do next.
He's had a pattern for a *long* time of wandering off in some odd direction,
releasing a mediocre album or two in the vein, then turning elsewhere and
doing something different. If he turns out a very good album every third
or fourth time, then I'm more than happy to "put up" with his experimentation.
I really liked Trans, BTW - Neil was a very early adopter of some technologies
that are now commonplace. As for Neil the guitar player, I like him for
very different reasons than I like Tom V. Tom's always seemed to me
to be a very calculating player, not someone who'd just let things rip,
but someone who's thought out the direction of a solo long before he's
gotten to it. I think that Richard's a much more instinctual player who
will just let it fly, and that's why the pairing of them sounds so damn good.
Neil's another "on-the-fly" player who might not be a technical player,
but sure can pull a ton of emotion out of a single note.

The Dead: It took me a *long* time to ever get to where I could
appreciate them. My first roomate in college was a real Deadhead who kept
playing the same 4 bootlegs over and over at any time of the day or night.
Eventually I came to realize that the Dead at their best epitomized the
new American folk music. At their worst, they were just a bunch of drug
abusers who had no business standing upright, never mind trying to play
their instruments.

Thanks for the tips on all the Monk stuff; I hadn't realized the Town Hall
concert was available!

Mojo is right: "Don Henley must die/Don't let him get back together/
with Glenn Frey/Don Henley must die!" The only song I hate more than
Stairway to Heaven is Hotel California. I have my own dark musical
closets - a Lenny & Squigtones album, anyone? * - but I can't forgive anyone
any bit of nostalgia for REO, Foreigner, Journey or any of that drek. Sorry.

* Nigel Tufnel appears on this 1979 release years before Spinal Tap.
