Re: the third album: The reason why it's never gotten a fair shake is
that it's not very "rock". It came out on the heels of the grunge
explosion and half of the people who first heard of Television at that
time heard of them as "punk progenitors", so they were expecting the
Ramones or something. Such folks probably would've been disappointed
even by Marquee Moon, but certainly weren't going to cotton to the
atmospheric and textural sounds of the third album.
Ironically, I think that with a sligthly updated production sound
(probably no more than a remix) it would be quite well received in
today's musical climate. Of course, Marquee Moon would be everyone's
Record of the Year, and sell like hotcakes if first released today,
but ironically if it hadn't been released when it was, little of
today's rock music would sound like it does anyway.
