Read "Steal This Book" by Abbie Hoffman; not much about flower power there. 
And one of the key people behind the Summer of Love in San Francisco was 
Emmett Grogan (who was featured in that recent Mojo special about Hippies) 
who was, among other things a major junkie and criminal, as well as being 
all-round brilliant. Read his autobiography "Ringlolevio", and consider that 
Emmett claimed that Abbie was a chancer who stole his (Emmett's) ideas. 
Emmett was probably the main reason for Altamont as well, according to Sonny 
Barger of the Hell's Angels.

Both Emmett and Abbie died in the 80s, apparently suicides.
