I have to agree, for the most part.  I picked up on _Musician_ 
somewhat later than you did.  (Maybe 81? 82?  83 at the latest...)  I 
think the fact that it was (or at least presented itself as) a jazz 
magazine made it a bit smarter than the average rock rag.  It's where 
I first heard of Monk and Ornette, Mission of Burma (and Wire in the 
same piece!), Glenn Branca, Laurie Anderson...and then they couldn't 
sustain it.  Pity.
_The Big Takeover_ is pretty good, but it's coming from more of a 
listener's perspective, so you don't get that muso-geeky buzz that 
Musician was so good at.   Opinionated, flashy _Creem_-style reviews 
seem to be doing ok, if lacking some of Lester's passion, but 
Musician's balance of aesthetics and technique doesn't seem to have 
been taken up by anyone I've read.
Anyone able to prove me wrong?  Please?
