if you dig hunter/ wagner guitar tagteam, check out mitch ryder's band DETROIT.
they released a (self-titled??? haven't owned it since college) record right
around 1970 & those very same boys are the guitarists....cover a "heavy" version
of "rock & roll" too...(obvious inspiration for lou)....
i love ryder...the record's a bit heavy-handed but kinda groundbreaking....which
leads me to......
post-zappa tho still early alice cooper....
those records certainly do kick ass & to illustrate our man lou's influence on
all the aforementioned, an old pal of mine relates a story where he caught
cooper in rochester, ny around the time of "killer"...the band opened with a 2
chord instrumental that sounded quite similar to the drone of "heroin" (rocked
up a bit, of course)....cooper then came out & kicked into a song with a very
lou chord progression (maybe "under my wheels").
after the show my friend ( a teenager at the time) approached cooper as he was
entering the downtown hotel he was staying at...wanting to show off, he told
cooper that he thought he heard a lotta lou reed in the songs, particularly the
opener ("wasn't that heroin w/out the words?")...cooper grinned & said something
to the effect of "i've ripped that bastard off for all he's
worth."....good-naturedly, of course.
