Re: (TV) The Ebay frenzy continues

All this recent auction madness has puzzled me considerably and i wondered
,as I'm sure many on the list have too,why now all of a sudden? Then i came
across a very interesting and illuminating article in the UK Guardian
newspaper last Saturday on the whole subject/culture of collectibles and the
buying/selling/forging thereof ...

The actual article itself ("The Impersonation of Emily") concerns this
mormon guy Mark Hoffman who forged an E. Dickinson poem and managed to fool
Sothebys in the process among many others-his story is both completely
fascinating and totally chilling (he murdered two people along the way and
is now in prison for life)..it contained the following passage:

"There is an escalating competition between auction houses, both real and
vrtual, for the burgeoning market in collectibles, today worth an estimated
$30 billion annually.America, awash in money from the longest bull-run in
history, has gone auction crazy.Where there was once a handful of auction
houses,there are now dozens."

However as prices sky-rocket there are more and more forgeries flying
around-caveat emptor (buyer beware) indeed...........
