(TV) Tal Farlow

For those who don't know, Tal Farlow was a phenomenal jazz guitarist (Gibson
even made a Tal Farlow model) who retired at the height of his career to
teach guitar and paint signs. He was known for his use of harmonics to play
long, extended passages as well as his furious bebop soloing (it was said
that if Charlie Parker played guitar, he would have sounded like Farlow).
In the 80s and 90s he began playing again, usually at small clubs in New
Jersey in a guitar - bass duo. I saw him several times, most notably at a
benefit for Harry Leahey (a New Jersey jazz legend, and no, that's not a
contradiction in terms). Farlow was a genuinely nice guy - once, when I
approached him after a set, expressing my admiration for a particular
passage, he sat down and SHOWED ME HOW TO DO IT, and explained the thinking
behind it. There was a tribute concert on Sony video about 12 years ago
called "All Strings Attached" that's well worth seeking out (I'd kill for a
copy)(really, name your target) and some of his CDs are still available and
well worth getting. Oh, by the way, this is an off-topic post.
