(TV) square pegs!

a tangiential link is better than none at all...

nick at nite reran eight episodes of _square pegs_
back to back last night to cap off their "80s
flashback" week. billy ficca's post-tv ensemble the
waitresses did the theme music that played over the
closing credits (though sadly the nick@nite announcer
stepped over this in the name of promotion), and the
last ep that aired (2am!) was the infamous pilot, in
which the waitresses headlined weemawee high's
freshman dance. it was nice seeing them up there
(billy got precious little screen time, though chris
butler had an amusing moment where he was smirking at
jami gertz's interpretive dance to "i know what boys
like"), but...it was also weird because i kept
wondering where these kids developed such
sophisticated taste in music in the days before
nirvana, when bands like the waitresses, the dead
boys, and devo (all of whom were namedropped or
appeared on the show) got distribution to the suburbs
like the one the kids lived in. the large number of
laurie anderson (!) and killer pussy posters in the
extremely well-stocked high school radio station (!!!)
also raised an eyebrow -- i mean, tom tom club i can
udnerstand, but don't you have to have a certain level
of maturity and intellect to appreciate laurie? this
isn't meant as snobbery, either -- there are times
when *i* don't get laurie, and i know she woulda
confused me when i was these kids' age.

anyway, since n@n is making sunday their "80s
flashback" night, it might be worth tuning in to see
if _square pegs_ becomes a regular fixture on this
programming block. then you too can watch, and
wonder.
