I remember reading once (on this list?) where the
full-length version was intended for the original LP, but
it was too long to fit on side 1 of the record, so it was
changed to a fade-out.  Then when the CD was released, the
original version was restored.

I think both versions are fine for their respective
formats... the LP fadeout works best as the last song on
side 1, and the CD ending sounds better with Elevation
coming right after.
