I'm going to theorize that Tom could have been in the car, asleep. 
This would explain both his presence at 2 PM *and* his 
nonparticipation.  Y'know, sort of like Daddy-o in _Beach Party_, or 
something.  (Yes, an awful flick, to be sure, but Dick Dale's in it.)
