(TV) List Thank You For The Go-Betweens And Some Other More Personal Offtopic Stuff...

Hey There,

As someone who is mostly a heavy-duty list lurker, I've had to stick my
head out from under a rock to thank whomever typed about The
Go-Betweens, way back when (I know I could check the list archives and
point to specific instances, but my time to devote to on-line uh,
"research" is in unfortunately short supply)...

Picked up a used copy of "Before Hollywood" their second album solely on
the dim recollection of hearing about them through this list. This to
me is one of my favorite things in reading your posts, is the
enthusiastic recollections of people into music that has lead me to pick
up stuff that I may not have otherwise (i.e. I cannot believe my life
was without Love's "Forever Changes" and The White Stripes just to name
two off the top of my head).

I'm obviously babbling, the result of too much coffee, but back to The
Go-Betweens, I love that a band and record from '83 that I was totally
unaware of can fall into one's life and now I can't get it out of the cd
player... I am far from a gifted music writer, and there is obviously
no substitute for just hearing it yourself but I totally respond to the
guitar interplay, which is certainly informed by Television, but I'm not
sure if it's really like Television, if that makes any sense... I dunno
maybe these hints from the two main guys from the liner notes might
help:

Grant McLennan: We got a bss player who plays a lead guitar; a drummer
Lindy, who has to play a very different style because of the type of the
songs being written and [Robert's] guitar playing is more a strum... a
map as opposed to an attitude. It's a very free kind of music, everyone
is soloing.

Robert Forster: We have got those riffs, a skeleton melodic toughness
which is an early '80s thing and on top we are warming it up,
overdubbing acoustic guitars and some very nice Hammond organ - at that
time very unfashionable '60s stuff and a unique combination.

Grant McLennan: We were listening to the Mama and Papas and the rest of
the world was listening to the Gang of Four - it's a very different
frame of mind.

All right, so ends the Go-Betweens infomercial, I have no affiliation
with the band and will make no financial gain in you folks picking up
their stuff...

One thing that would perhaps help me financially, would be if anyone out
there knows of somebody who might want to sublet my one bedroom
apartment in Chicago from June 1- August 31, with an option to renew,
I'm moving to a larger place with my wife, and HATE the idea of having
to pay rent on two places at once... Contact me offlist for further
information...

I'll leave you with one further and final shameless self promotion...
For folks in the US, you can pick up a copy of the May issue of
"Esquire" magazine with Tom Cruise on the cover, and see a cartoon of
mine on page 62... If anybody out there is interested in getting on my
e-mail list to receive notice of when my monthly online propaganda
newsletter goes up, again drop me an e-mail off list - you can take a
look at it here:

Thanks for your time on this Saturday morning.

Best,

Adam
