My understanding was that it was a phrase that Townshend would throw out to 
interviewers as something that would sound deep at a first, quick impression, 
but didn't actually mean anything. The idea was to see if the interviewer 
just said "ahh, yes" as if he understood or called him on it.

Basically, I think it's a response to the number of interviewers that want PT 
to be a pundit of sorts for "rock and roll" as a whole.
