Del Shannon shreds IMO, especially that organ player of his. Maybe you
disagree, but I say give 'Go Away Little Girl' another chance and tell me
that proto-lounge melody doesn't grab you. Then find a girl and do a
little twisty rumba to 'Hey Little Girl' (if they'd only bumped up the
guitar a little bit). DS was a true rock n roller and the Beatles were in
awe of him. And so he came to represent a style that was out of fashion in
the public's mind after Richard Lester invaded the USA and Dr. Goldfoot
had to shut down the bikini machine. I would say the prevalent MOR mood
music that The Beatles bashed off was more like the likes of Paul Anka and
Dean Martin. To me Lennon and McCartney were a an offshoot of the Brill
Building style. They brought guitars back into the mix, but then didn't
they go back to Tin Pan Alley orchestrations during the mustache period?
Maybe if Del took a more enlightened trip as the Beatles had (or had the
luck) he'd have shook his demons and still be rocking today.

Speaking of old fashion tunes, I was listening to the Andrew Sisters
version of 'Rum and Coca cola' and the say, "... working for the yonki
dollar."

Also there's a great Bobby Fuller Four song called 'Linda Lou'. It doesn't
sound anything like TV's 'Lindi Lu' but it's a killer rock and roll song
nonetheless.

BTW Lou Christie does a great version of 'If I Fell' on the Lightnin'
Strikes album. This album is not on CD so I transferred this amazing song
"Baby We Got To Run Away" from vinyl and you might find it on Audiogalaxy
(get it before Audiogalaxy is shut down)

Hats off to Larry,
GL
