Re: (TV) OT: thoughts on The Hives and the severity of their status as a schtick band?

I like the hives, or at least the idea behind them, I've dont actually like them enough to buy the album(s)

as long as you get past they fact that they come across as a knowing pastiche you can enjoy them for the fun pop fluff that they are (and even then whose to say they are any more contrived than any band ?) and you allow them the 'odd' turn of phrase when english is not the first language where other bands I would find it annoying

at least they are a lot more exciting on stage than the strokes

if you do like stuff like that, check out 'the D4', they do it right

"No, none of you assholes were here, and now
we're on the radio and you all love us, fuck you."

thats what good bands should be saying or at least realising - the people that hes addressing that to are the people who buy one or two albums a year and they are the same one or two as everyone else

its a curse when a great album becomes a popular one, because you can only see bands in bigger venues at bigger prices - and if you can get a ticket your surrounded by people with only a passing interest in the music and the whole 'industry' surrounding the band expects them to have another hit

so (to bring it back on topic) we can be thankful that television have so far managed to avoid that 'hit career' situation !

Okay, I hate to make my first post to the list in ages be off-topic, but
there's something that's been bothering me to no end. Everybody seems to love
The Hives. I like their first album, Barely Legal, just fine -raw, fast,
mindless rock record. Veni Vidi Vicious, on the other hand, seems very dumbed
down. It's too kind, it's too polite. Not that I want to slight anyone for
putting out a pop record -it's a good pop record in it's own right,
but...well, something just annoys me, considering that it's this suit-wearing
Swedish five piece who obviously can rock out. One kick-ass record, one
comparably bland record...the only word that comes to mind is "insincere."
Granted, the first record's mindless, but the second one doesn't even have
any guts to it. It leaves me wondering if they even care about what they're
doing, just so long as they're a "cool-looking rock band". Their visual
gimmick -moddish attire- doesn't even fit with the stuff on either record
(save maybe "Find Yourself Another Girl" on the second one). Even worse...a
friend of mine went and saw them at the Metro here in Chicago a little while back; she's been into them for almost two years. Apparently, they came out on stage, asked who'd seen them opening for some other band there last fall (she
and maybe three other people put up their hands), and then they basically
said something to the effect of, "No, none of you assholes were here, and now
we're on the radio and you all love us, fuck you."

I mean, come on. Isn't this almost as bad as -if not worse than- the pop idol shit that's been the defacto standard for U.S. top 40 radio over the past few
years? In my opinion, it's definitely far worse a pose. What do the rest of
you think?
