Best punk band.... real punks wouldn't want to be called 'the best'

Who best embodied the punk movement in the late 70's...?

The Ramones. First and best.
 The Saints were great, Buzzcocks were the pop punks before Green day, Patti
Smith made art punk, the Pistols made it commercial, Clash brought in
reggae, etc etc etc etc
Do the Minutemen count in this contest? Dead Kennedys? Too late - they are
80's bands.

I think punk is more a DIY attitude than anything else. I remember the first
time I heard of the Sex Pistols, it was in a little article in Creem. The
story goes that someone in the audience yelled out "You can't even play!"
 and Sid said "So what?!".
That's punk.

The greatest punk band of all time..? The Stooges, of course.
