and here i think joe is a bit extreme, and i do agree
with scott.  the fact is that medications can improve
quality of life in many ways -- keep you from dying of
pneumonia, allow you to have sex after prostate
surgery -- and allow you to have normal, healthy brain
chemistry that lets you lead a normal life.  in the
same way chemical imbalances lead to diabetes, for
instance, which can lead to all sorts of complications
and death -- chemical imbalances in the brain can lead
to real debility, and death (suicide).  and there are
some really great drugs now that help. 

it's no one's attempt to take control of anyone's
life, and in fact the drugs are useless if someone
doesn't chose to use them and want to be well.  they
simply allow for decent quality of life.  like, say,
viagra.
