I am seeing them a second time in NYC the week after that. Can't
wait.

I just picked up the FRANK BLACK FRANCIS release this week. I had
skipped it back in October, when it was released, because the reviews
were so lackluster, so I am pleasantly surprised with how good it is.
CD1 consists of demos of Black, solo, running through the Pixies
repertoire with his producer a few days before the band recorded
their initial demos (of which 8 wound-up becoming their first EP,
COME ON PILGRIM). It's the kind of material that would be essential
if it were circulating as unauthorized material; as an official
release it's more of a curiousity.

But CD2 is the real treat, featuring remakes of a dozen or so Pixies
songs by Black with Two Pale Boys in 2003. In theory, remakes of
proven classics by the original artist is a bad idea, but all of
these remakes are slow, moody, heavily rearranged versions, and
almost all work well, especially some of the earlier stuff like
"Nimrod's Son", "Levitate Me", and "Cactus". Even "Monkey Gone to
Heaven", a song that is sheer perfection in its original version,
sounds pretty good in this new arrangement.

This set is definitely a better listen, to my ears, than the 9-track
PIXIES cd 4AD put out a year ago (which consisted of the leftovers
from those original demos that didn't make it to COME ON PILGRIM).
Plus, it's a 2CD set priced around $15 or so. Not bad.
