Verlaine and Steve Albini?

Well, I use Electrical as an example because they actually post their rates. Many studios use a sliding scale. If Tom wanted to stick close to home, there's Studio G in Brooklyn, operated by Tony Maimone (ex-Ubu). (Their site says to call them for their rates.) Or maybe Tom gets a discount/free use of Sonic Youth's Echo Canyon. But I was wrong about Sterling--they're mastering only, and expensive at that. John Golden is much more affordable, and does good work.

Six days of studio time: Verlaine does a take, argues with Albini for 6
hours, walks out.

From what I understand, the Electrical philosophy is that the artist is paying, the artist is in charge, and he shouldn't get any arguments on aesthetics. That said, who knows what would go on in such a pairing?

Five remaining days of studio time: Albini mixes and remixes the first and
only track until it sounds like "All Apologies".

Actually, I think that was one of the ones remixed by Andy Wallace at the label's insistence, and therefore not representative. A Verlaine album that sounds as good as, say, Bedhead's _Transaction de Novo_, or Joel Phelps's _3_ would be a fine thing.
