Re: (TV) Interesting Review

What are you missing?

Short answer: A lot.

Slightly longer answer: Not everybody likes the same thing. I don't think
there's any way to argue someone into a change of taste.

That said, RT has a large catalogue, which encompasses a very wide range of
styles and genres. I'd be surprised if there isn't anything there for you, even
if you don't become a fan of him across the board. Possible suggestions: Try out
the French, Frith, Kaiser, and Thompson records for some more "out" playing - as
well as a fair amount of silliness. You say you've listened to early Fairport -
does that include "A Sailor's Life," which a number of people, myself included,
has a "feel" that overlaps with some of Television/Tom's looser, less
hard-rocking stuff? If you want guitar pyrotechnics, live versions of "Can't
Win" are a good bet.

And keep in mind that a lot of RT's appeal is that he is a great songwriter -
something Clapton cannot claim to be.

Guys, I have to admit something: I've never quite understood the
appeal of Richard Thompson -- or rather, I do intellectually, but I've
never *felt* his playing the way I do guitarists who truly move me.

Don't get me wrong, his playing is all fine enough; and with regards
to technical proficiency, Thompson is certainly a "better" player than
Neil Young and Verlaine --

But as someone who can raise the hair on the back of my neck?

There is just no comparison.

To me Thompson brings to mind sort of a Clapton with better pedigree
and resume. For all his reported mastery, I've yet to hear even one
tune that is truly capable of transporting me.

What am I missing? *

* I should say right now it clearly isn't Shoot Out The Lights, old
Fairport Convention records, or any of the many live releases or
bootegs I've been given.
