(TV) OT: Polar Prize

I forgot to notify the group about last month's Polar Prize show, where Patti
Smith and the Kronos Quartet was awarded this prize from the hands of the
Swedish king. No doubt a highlight in everyone's lives, this moment. Photos

pics of the Swedish royal family, including the pregnant Crown Princess
Victoria, but also Patti Smith together with her litarary idol, socialist
crime novelist Henning Mankell. Extensive reporting in our media, including
one TV interview with PSG members in New York's Electric Lady studio. Smith
also revealed that after the success of "Just Kids", her next writing project
will be a thriller, largely inspired by the writings of Mankell.

Seems to me like the prize is gaining more and more prestige around the world,
and that -- after almost 20 years -- the popular section has now opened for
artists a bit outside the mainstream; previous winners in the last years
include experientalists like Peter Gabriel and Bjvrk. Lou Reed might be up for
it next year.

Reed, by the way, is alongside Bob Dylan the only known lyricist to be
annually nominated for the even more famous Nobel Prize; after Italian
dramatist Dario Fo got it, it became clear that not only writers whose works
are printed novels or poetry could get it. And by the way II: The Swedish
Academy, which picks the winner, consists of 18 members, all of them serving
for life -- although two of them does not participate anyore, due to internal
intrigues. Last Friday, a new member was announced, to fill the set of a
deceased author. The selected one was an unknown linguist, whose list of
academic writings was surprisingly short -- and even more surprising was that
one of these few writings dealt with the phonetics of this character:
