As for precedents in rock, the first two that came to mind were Mike Bloomfield when he wasn't playing blues, mainly East-West and the Holy Modal songs with Al Kooper, and Robbie Krieger on Light My Fire. I've always heard a lot of Yardbirds in Foxhole, too.
