This helps reduce digital artifacts, which are the result of the underlying
algorithms used to manipulate the data.  If you've ever heard a low-res MP3,
you'll have heard all sorts of artifacts.

It also allows the possibility of a higher-res release on DVD, Blu-ray or
a digital release.  With computer storage prices (both HDD and SSD) continuing
to fall, it's a lot easier to have a digital audio library that doesn't rely
on lossy compression like MP3 to be of a managable size.  Some labels are 
doing that now, but not enough.
