RE: (TV) tom at the 930

Tom,

Your report is much appreciated.

Does your last name really begin with a 'V'?

Hopefully, there will be more than 150 people at the Bowery Ballroom Thurs
and Fri.

Saw Tom at the 930 club last night. Attendance was a bit sparse, maybe 100
or 150 people showed up.

I've never seen Tom solo before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I was
talking to a guy there who had seen him previously who said he had played
Television songs at a previous solo gig he'd seen, but none were played last
night. Everything, as far as I could tell, was his solo vocal stuff.

He had Jimmy Ripp and Fred Smith, I'm not sure who the drummer was. He could
have passed for Fred's gigantic son, a really huge dude, a heavy hitter with
a lot of swing.

I wouldn't call the set tight, as there were a few flubs and a false starts,
plus the usual amount of tuning, but it wasn't a train wreck either. Once
the songs got going the rhythm players held the fort down and Tom got to
stretch out a bit. Jimmy is a really excellent guitarist...he did a lot of
cool spacey delay stuff.

I had a bit of trouble hearing Tom's singing, but that was probably because
I was standing in a bad spot.

As far as his playing goes, it he was hitting a lot of notes, doing his
slidey vibrato thing, doing lots of volume swells, but I got the impression
he was spending time searching for a melody or a line in some spots. It was
all very impressive, and there weren't many flubs, but I sort of felt like
he was exploring a bit and hadn't quite figured out where he was going. I
could very easily be full of shit on this, this is only the 3rd time I've
seen him. Everyone seemed to dig it.

Tom was playing his unfinished stratty looking guitar with lipstick pickups
and jazzmaster neck. I was actually close enough to see that the headstock
on the neck was painted....looked like shoreline gold. I have no idea what
amp he was using....it looked like a home made head wired to a totally old
school wood cab. Jimmy had a strat through a hot rod deville.

Good show, I was happy to be there.
