I can't say that I agree with either Scott or Howard on this one. In the
late 70's and early 80's the Sugarhill label was putting out some pretty
great
stuff like "Rapper's Delight" and "8th Wonder" by the Sugarhill Gang. Then
there
was Kurtis Blow's "The Breaks" and a whole slew of other Melodic Rap
numbers.
I'm not into the Gangsta Rap stuff where they're rappin' about stickin'
blades
up so and so's ass and killin' whitey, and blah blah blah. Some of it is
actually
kinda humorous because it was all for shock value. Public Enemy were talking
about
wipin' whitey off the planet, yet their boss/the man who signed them was
Rick Ruben.
How serious could they be? As far as Lauryn Hill goes, I think she's a
wonderful R&B
vocalist, lots of Stevie Wonder comin' outta her voice. She has well thought
out
and clever arrangements. She does it all, the writing, arranging, and
producing.
I think she's pretty great and a brilliant young lady. Y'all may not agree,
but that's
what makes us all so different. If we all thought alike, how could we all
fall in?
