(TV) R&R Animal

Way back in '77 or so, when I was a mere prat, I was in high school when
the two largest factions were the Guidos (disco fans) and Hicks (Allman
Bros. and Lynryd Skynyrd fans). I didn't really fit in with either crowd,
but tended towards the Hicks because some of the music wasn't too bad (though
Freebird and any Led Zeppelin song still make me cringe).

Male adolescent angst was setting in, and while I was still a year or
so away from discovering Elvis, the Clash and the Ramones, I'd already
found the Who's Quadrophenia (still the definitive MAA album to me) and
Lou's R&R Animal (though I only had a vague idea of what the VU was).

Oh, the bombast! The swooping guitar lines! The SOUND of it all! The
lyrics! This was the first Lou I'd heard (except for Walk on the Wild Side,
which isn't typical of LR), and I was hooked for life.

I've come to realize that R&RA isn't typical Lou either, and that I
much prefer other albums of his, but this one is special for me.

A side story: There's a local radio station (WBRU) here that's not a
college station, but is run by Brown University students. They used to be
great (and I used to work for them then), but back in the early 80's they
allowed themselves to be programmed and they've pretty much sucked ever
since. Every now and then I'll hear them play Sweet Jane from R&RA,
but.... they leave off the guitar intro and fade up at the strummed chords
just before the vocal starts!! Jee-zuz, boys! You may as well not play
the song if you're going to do that! Or even better, play the VU version.
