(TV) Richard Lloyd at Manitoba's

Go.

Okay, I'll elaborate: this was a great evening, and despite Richard's
self-depreciating introduction ("We're not called Testing, Testing, 1-2-3
for nothing." ) the band seemed more than tight enough to me, able to follow
Richard on one of his improvisatory flights or instigate a few of their own.
While a couple (only a couple) of songs didn't so much end as fall apart, it
was wonderful to see musicians taking these chances. It was live rock 'n'
roll in a bar, just like it should be. Morning after-blur ( as well as
under-mixed vocals ) means I don't remember the names of all the songs, but
I do recall "Submarine (the opening number );" "Alchemy" given a somewhat
heavier treatment, "Strange, Strange," "The Knockdown" - and the encore of
"Heart of Gold" and "Good Times, Bad Times" (cut short by Richard being "way
out of tune ") were standouts, as well as one ending sequence with all the
musicians trading fours. Chris Butler and Bibi Farber were real surprises,
as I was most familiar with Chris's work as a guitarist and songwriter in
the Waitresses and Bibi's self-accompaniment on her solo gigs - they both
acquitted themselves nicely. Peter Stuart is no slouch on bass, either,
sounding like a cross between Chris Hillman and John Entwhistle, and Richard
seemed to throw himself into every tune. All this and Handsome Dick Manitoba
himself behind the bar - what more could you want? You've got two more
chances.
