I've been reading the speculations about Meltzer putting down Tom
because "he was jealous". Permit me to defend Meltzer. Tom alienated and
infuriated many people including journalists (Meltzer, Bangs) and
musicians (Talking Heads, Blondie). They all wanted to be friends with
Tom but Tom had an arrogant off-putting attitude. Tom was the jealous
one, competing with everyone and everything. But that jealousy led to
works of genius. His reluctance to befriend people on the scene stemmed
from his own insecurity. His paranoia kept him alone in his room
creating masterpieces.
