(TV) For the sake of science/drinking sake

For the sake of science (and because I'm more than a little crazy) last night I took some time to listen carefully to the 4 different pressings and the cd version of the album Marquee Moon that Michael Carlucci mentioned in his previous e-mail.

I will also admit that I was mistaken about the rankings of these 5 versions. I previously claimed the Japanese pressing to be the best of the lot.

Michael, as you usually are about all things TV-wise, you were right about the Japanese pressing. I agree that the pressing was mastered/lathed way too low. As a result I had to crank my amp up to my maximum setting of 10 ----no make that a Spinal tap 11!---to get it to sound loud enough, and then of course the hiss became more noticeable.

My revised rankings in decending order: 1) British vinyl, 2) US vinyl, 3) Japanese vinyl, 4) CD re-issue, 5) German vinyl (unfortunately, I only own the inferior reissue version).

At the risk of sounding like a broken record---if you read this Michael C., can you shed any light on the presence of an un-credited 10th song on the German vinyl release on Tom's 1st solo record? I promise not to ever mention this topic again, I'm suffering from too much sake.

Subject: (TV) Foot In The Mouth!

    Hello Y'all,

Well I'll be the first to admit that I've erred. Over the weekend
I got in a mint Marquee Moon LP. I played it for the first time since the CD's
re-issue came out. I have to admit that while I like the CD for bringing out
certain embellishments otherwise lost in the vinyl's grooves, the overall
sound must go to the vinyl. I was stunned, that even on this low budget
stereo in the store that the LP had it hands down over the CD. Just goes to
show that you're never too old to still stick your foot in your mouth. Of
course this sent me on a wild fidelity comparison. In order this is what I
discovered that the UK vinyl was superior to all LP releases, then the US
pressing, the German(original, not the badly pressed re-issue)pressing, and
lastly the biggest disappointment of them all, the Japanese vinyl pressing.
Anyone else carzy enough to try this audio comparison? I'd love to compare
notes. M T C
