You are correct, sir - according to the Fender Book by Bacon and Day, these
models were intended to replace the Mustang as student guitars - though that
humbucker-equipped model still makes me think they were trying to make
inroads into Gibson territory (to me, a humbucker on a Fender is like scuba
gear on a fish, but to each his own).
Regarding the first Boom Boom album - that was a real letdown when it first
came out, especially if you were familiar with the demo version that had
played on BCN, TBS and ERS.  Compared to the demo, the album version sounded
plodding.
