I had the same problem with Richard's Boston show.  I think the auto-level
function is skewed to quieter things.  I've used Sony MD recorders for
the interviews with Richard and the band and for a performance by a small
band of Nepalese musicians.  Both sound _great_.  Not so the RL performance.
