(TV) (OT)The Strokes--Is This It/The problem with hype...

is that it is guaranteed to turn off one group of
listeners from the outset. Then, there will be a
second group induced by the tossed around refernces to
the Velvet Underground, Television and similar ilk
only to find little resemblance to those bands, and
the cd is summarily dismissed. That is unfortunate
because The Strokes' "Is This It" is a solid rock
record with great pop sensibilities and simple but
tight musicianship which suggests far better things to
come. Forget about Television. These guys aren't
worthy to carry Richard, Tom, Billy and Fred's
instruments (although the Bass playing is certainly
interesting throughout). And while lead singer Julian
Casablancas has a Lou Reedy thing going in spots, he
is a superior singer. They do some distortion on his
voice and I suspect it sounds even better clean. Good
lyrics--what you would expect from young 20 something
Rock and Rollers. There really isn't a bad song in the
bunch. Spin it 3 times in a row and you should catch
on. It may not be the next big thing, but it's one of
the best you will buy this year.

"If every museum in the New World were emptied, if every
famous building in the Old World were destroyed and only
Venice saved, there would be enough there to fill a full lifetime
with delight. Venice, with all its complexity and variety,
is in itself the greatest surviving work of art." --Evelyn Waugh
