I've seen a couple interesting thoughts from other acts on these lines.

I've got an interview with Andy Partridge from XTC where he tells the
interviewer that his mother asks him "why don't you just write a hit, dear?"
and he replies "if I could, I would!" (that's the gist, anyway). Oh, and XTC
albums are loaded with potential hits (in my mind), but they never get played.

The other odd one is kinda the opposite. After their radical 4 CDs played
simultaneous ZAIREEKA project, the Flaming Lips worked on something they
thought was also experimental (THE SOFT BULLETIN), but it ended up being
their most accessible record by far.

you look good ..."
