(TV) Richard Thompson

Russ,

I have never seen/read an interview in which
Verlaine specifically mentions Richard Thompson's
playing but his reference to Fairport Convention in
1977-78 more than likely was primarialy his respect
for Thompson's playing. (I must say I don't find their
guitar playing styles or sound at all similar.)

Robert Christgau[sp.?], the music critic for the Village
Voice, would occassionally recommend, in a short column
about weekend things to do in the city, that the paper's
readers go to see Verlaine whenever Verlaine was playing
live in NYC in the early and mid-1980s and Christgau
would then almost always say something like
"... Tom Verlaine, who except for maybe Richard Thompson,
is the greatest rock guitar-hero ...". (Of course, I found
this hard to read, but I know many on this list think
Thompson is a better guitarist or at least the equal to
Verlaine, ansd I respect those opinions).
