No surprises on Heathen, however.
I bought three new discs recently: 'Frantic', 'Heathen', and 'By the Way'.

I really love Frantic - the ol' boy is back. I don't hear what the big hype
is with the Eno cut. To me, it's the weakest. Colin Goode has been good for
Ferry. And it's so good to hear Spedding on a Ferry record again.

Heathen has it's moments, but I wonder if Bowie has run out of subjects
which are meaningful to him (actually, I think he ran out of steam around
the time of 'Black Tie..').
Bowie just doesn't seem to be all that interested in pulling out all the
stops. The power, the 'oomph', the balls just isn't there. The songs are
equally uninspired, and just meander along until the fade... Hey, there's
some great moments, but overall....ppffffttt.
I know what it's missing: the thrill I used to get from Bowie records. I
forgot -it's been so long. I guess I should be excited that this one came in
above the last 5 or so. I am trying to listen to Heathen multiple times so I
can build my fascination, but it's not working.

Now, 'By the Way' - the Red Hots are really onto something, and without
that white boy pseudo-funk. This record finishes what they started w/
Californication. The vocals drone on through every song, some melodies and
some of the guitar playing is 'pedestrian' at best, but 'it rocks!', as my 9
year old says.
I would venture that I am the only person on this list who owns those
records. I also have 1/2 of the 100 records I shouldn't, but I am not
throwing them out, unless someone wants to buy them on eBay.

 - just felt chatty this early in the morning. Have a nice day. Everybody
says 'hi'.
