Off Topic request: anyone on MM List familiar with a folk

Not personally, but a bit of searching turns up http://www.ellispaul.com/new_lyrics/ where you can listen to excerpts and judge for yourself.

Is he a terrible wimp ala James Taylor or is he the real thing?

Haven't listened yet, but I'm given pause by the inclusion of Pittsburgh's own WYEP in the list of interviews/performances. There's a reader review at Rolling Stone that suggests something of a mixed bag with this guy: http://www.rollingstone.com/recordings/review.asp?aid=2044762&cf=4232

in (so I need to know if there's any hope/future for the relationship
(well, at least as regards each other's musical preferences).

If you have Shockwave and/or RealPlayer, you can find out today.

My closest friend has advised against me making and then sending her a
a tape/compilation of TV/Television songs at this early stage as that
could be fatal.

Yeah. Hold the Jandek in reserve, too. Trust me on this.

This brings up the whole subject for those on MM List who are/were married or
are/were in a (serious) relationship: having strong preferences and great passion
for music do/did you have to 'work extra hard' at not offending your
wives'/girlfriends' musical tastes, and what is the secret of getting your beloved
to put up with' your Television/TV predilections?

The dating phase was quite some time ago, but I recall concentrating on playing things that weren't harsh--say, Brian Eno's _Another Green World_, some Birdsongs of the Mesozoic tracks, and then gradually introducing more challenging things (_Flash Light_ among them). Patricia's still not particularly fond of Tom's voice, but she's not fond of Joel Phelps's, either (when he goes for those high notes) and I haven't let that stop me from playing either one (and she appreciates the quality of the songs). So by now I can pretty much play anything from Neubauten to Naked City (the unreleased live version of "NY Flat Top Box" is a fave) to Neutral Milk Hotel and it's not a problem. And yeah, even Jandek, from time to time.

HTH,
