(TV) soundboard vs. audience

yes, i just got a creekdippers soundboard from denmark
that is mostly vocals -- vic williams proclaiming
loudly, no instruments in sight. and, even with all
things being equal, i really like the ambience of
_good_ audience recordings.

had a very un-tv-like experience last night -- went to
a robert randolph show, where taping is actually
_encouraged_. couple of guys there setting up
equipment -- audience recordings, no soundboards.
they come up with fabulous sound; but they also use
fabulous equipment.

spoke with one taper who described bands who don't
allow taping as "establishment" -- leaving the idea
that the bands out now who allow taping are
anti-establishment. that's a pretty apt description
in many ways. bands who allow taping having a very
non-traditional take on ownership / rights /
contracts.

randolph has a warner bros. contract, yet he and they
allow all his shows to be taped. and, he seems to be
doing well.

the funny thing is, i couldn't bring in my (kinda
fancy) camera. door guys said "band policy" -- "they
don't want folks selling pictures and profiting from
them."
