And I believe Zappa used the boots as source instead of his lifted masters.
That way the Zappa-issued boots came with all the low-fi snap crackles and
pops.

I think he got this idea from Frank Zappa, who considered his "Beat
the Boots" series one of his better ideas.  He knew people wanted this
material and were going to buy it anyway, so why not have it be a
legitimate release and make the $$$ himself?
