Re: (TV) Re: Albert Ayler

ayler! some of the greatest music i've ever heard.
there's nothing like it. from the accounts i've read,
he did most likely have a major mental illness --
probably exacerbated by drugs. there is a book-length
online bio, and one bio published in german...but now
an english bio in the works, the author is working
with donald. also, a boston filmmaker has been
working on a documentary which he hopes to have at
some film festivals by 2004. i've heard he has
rescued the final concert footage from france...the
only ayler footage of ayler playing.

the really great news: revenant records (austin based
and loved around the world) has announced an 8-disc
box set of unreleased performances, to be called "holy
ghost" -- scheduled for 2004. revenant does great
work with these box sets.

and yeah, ayler had been a minor golf celebrity. but
what did he wear on the course? guy was a fly
dresser!

i'll have to think about ayler's influence on tom's
playing. ayler was so loud and out and uncontrolled
-- still all the while the complete master of his
instrument, the guy could play -- but loud and open is
not an approach i usually associate with tom. not in
the ayler sense.
