(TV) from Magnet Mag

I don't know if anyone saw this Magnet Magazine capsule review of the CC
resissue of "Tom Verlaine". If this has been seen by all before, my
apologies. - Russ

Tom Verlaine Tom Verlaine (Collectors Choice) The rumors were true;
there are two different versions of this reissue of the (then-former)
Television guitarists 1979 solo debut. More on that in a sec.
Meanwhile, what makes this such a timeless record, given the long shadow
immediately cast by Verlaines prior vehicle? In a word (or three),
songs and passion. Right from the git-go, with the angular riffing and
tuff-dude vox of The Grip Of Love, through the jittery anthemism of
Kingdom Come (later covered by Bowie), to the rollicking,
Velvets-styled closer Breakin In My Heart, Verlaine sings and plays
with the soulful, swingin intensity of a jazz cat while maintaining the
tunefulness and tension that marked Television. Verlaine himself pens
the liner notes. Now, about my initial comment: Collectors Choice
somehow let two editions of this slip into the marketplace, one of which
is already a highly sought-after item. Seems that if youd mail-ordered
Tom Verlaine early on youd have gotten a completely different,
previously unreleased mix. Apparently there were two masters in the
vaults, each having different dates listed on the tape boxes. The
so-called rejected mix was tappederroneously, as tapes bearing later
dates were used for the original LP and a mid-90s import CDby CC at
first. (One giveaway can be heard immediately with Grip Of Love, whose
mix is strikingly different and it has an alternate vocal as well; also,
the mistake set has a running time of 36:53, while the correct one
is 36:45.) When CC discovered the goof, it quickly withdrew the
incorrect edition, so the copies you find in stores contain the same
music as the original album. Aint collecting grand?
