Ah, not according to Television who have always insisted they have

This is true, although McLaren alone gets the 'credit'- the Pistols
didn't exist and its members could barely afford to get out to the
suburbs of London, let alone NYC.

Over here the Ramones are usually credited with instigating Punk
although McLaren certainly brought the look back from Richard Hell.
