I saw Pere Ubu in Providence years ago, at a show to which dozens of
tickets had been given away by a local radio station (which wasn't
even playing any Pere Ubu music, either). This meant that there were
dozens of people at the show who really couldn't have cared less about
the band, but had gone as a social event.

These folks congregated at the back of the relatively small club
and proceeded to maintain dozens of conversations, speaking loudly to
talk above the moderate volume of the band. There was a period during
which the band played louder, followed by an increase in crowd volume,
followed by... well, you get the idea.

Eventually David tired of this fight, and changed his tactics. He put
the microphone down, squatted down at the edge of the stage, and told
us folks at the edge of the stage a very funny story sans amplification.

As bursts of laughter kept coming from the folks at the edge of the stage,
the rest of the crowd, realizing they were missing out on something,
started calling out "Hey" or other noises to try and indicate they were
feeling left out. David finished the story to peals of laughter, stood
up and took the microphone again, said something like "see what happens
when you don't pay attention?" and went into the next song.

The crowd was a little better after that, but only a little.
