Re: (TV) Johnny We Hardly Knew Ye

i was surprised when i found out the ramones had hopes
of being superstars. i had always attributed a who
cares attitude to em.

I read a satirical piece once where the ramones were
the mega-stars of the masses, and rock critics pined
over why nobody got van halen, the writers
darlings. it does raise the question of whether the
ramones would have still been the band we love if they
had become superstars. and the question i keep asking
myself is whether *any* legitimate, vital music can
ever achieve mass success again.

did we have a single golden age, where folks like
dylan and hendrix were pop stars? when music of real
artistic merit was lauded by a large segment of the
market? is it now impossible that anything real can
get through? seems so, what with the huge corporate
block of record companies, radio, tv and distribution.
its like no living thing could grow up in that.

of course, alternative production and distribution has
really taken off, giving some of us room to breath.
speaking of which, there are some great ramones shows
up at easytree right now. rock and roll college is
a commercial boot i hadnt seen before, wonderful.
