Re: (TV) In offense of Cover (hee hee)

"Five Miles of You," with its bittersweet tension
between ambivalence and desire, is maybe the most
beautiful of all Verlaine's love songs...is one of the
most transcendent moments in postpunk pop music.
--Monica Kendrick 1996-

Deep is the longing that I feel,
It's like a light that goes right through
This darkness I've been working in,
Trying to do so much for you.
To feel you close to me this way
Much closer than the air I breathe,
I come to recognise my fate
As something you've already seen.
(Walk)
I've been walking till it ain't true,
I've been walking five miles of you.
It's a kind of paradise, your smile,
But why I haven't got a clue,
It's something I would like to solve,
The mystery of the pleasure of you.
(Walk)
I've been walking till it ain't true,
I've been walking five miles of you,
Five miles of you.
Walking out in the wind and light,
Before me I see only you.
Walking out in the wind and light
Into the mystery of you
I've been walking till it ain't true,
I've been walking five miles of you.
(Walk)

Versus:

Thunder ...
Thunder and lightning
One drop of rain on the back of my hand
How I ... ooh I
How I love to wander
Someone came in the middle of the night
Threw me in a room without walls.

Yes, I love to wander
A cold wind slapped my face
And another time to shut down
Well, my arms they felt so weak and strong
Under your window, well it shone like a light
Tonight the air has teeth
I wish I had another way to breathe
And all you, you ever say
All you ever say
All you ever say, is ..
Stop Breakin' in my heart.

And so it came to pass
Breakin' in my heart
That is, once upon a time
Breakin' in my heart
I saw the color that sent the geese south
Breakin' in my heart
I saw the color, your golden mouth
Breakin' in my heart
I saw the color that whistles far away
Breakin' in my heart
I saw the color; I walked away
Breakin' in my heart

Deep in your dark eyes
Breakin' in my heart
Deep where the daylight searches
Breakin' in my heart
I keep waitin' and waitin'
Breakin' in my heart
About a moment of gold
Breakin' in my heart

I can see the "Bittersweet tension between ambivalence
and desire" in the FMOY lyrics - but BINMH rings
truer, and has "tonight the air has teeth" line, which
as a Scottish native at this time of year I can firmly
attest to being completely true - and he has Scottish
blood, our Tom!

Does anybody on this list agree that "Five Miles of
You" can be mentioned in the same breath/as being
equal to other classic Verlaine "love songs"
(quotation marks used cautiously, as definition of
"love song" is rather difficult with Mr Verlaine)?

Such as: "Mary Marie", "The Scientist Writes a
Letter", "Last Night", "Breakin' in my Heart",
"Venus", "Rhyme", "Song", "Pillow", "There's a
Reason", "Always"....surely...for me that song doesn't
fall in with these others. That "Walk" chorus sounds
like Megatron burping! That ain't romantic!(There is
another one that I can't remember right now...Yonki
Time! That's the other one! Beautiful song!
Heart-wrenchingly soulful!)

The posts about this have given me more of an idea
what he was trying to achieve with "Cover" - Cheers
Keith, LJC et al - at least I can better understand
its appeal. And each to their own - I can't wait to go
home and listen to the Mahavishnu Orchestra, which I
am sure would have many people on this list gritting
their teeth!
