I'd definitely say that _someone_ had been listening to Richard T.:

Alan Licht points out the same thing on the liner notes to the remastered MM.

Over the years Tom has said a lot of ridiculous things in interviews (e.g. the whole silly Roxy-Music-stole-my-ideas rant). Who knows whether he means any of them or whether he just says the first thing that comes into his head? He's a strange person...
