(TV) Verlaine & Country Joe & the Fish

In early 1980s' interviews, Verlaine mentioned them as a [slight?] influence

on his guitar playing----but of course not their psychedelic jams .

An instrumental song of theirs called "Section 43" reminds me of some
of the more atmospheric stuff on the album, Adventure. I highly recommend
their music except for the "Fixin'-to-Die"/Woodstock thing (Also see below.)

One of the original and most popular San Francisco Bay Area psychedelic
bands,
Country Joe & the Fish, was formed by lead singer Country Joe McDonald
(b. Jan. 1, 1942). The Berkeley group still had one foot in the jugband
sound on their first EP, released in 1965 (featuring a folk version of their

anthem "I-Feel-like-I'm-Fixin'-to-Die Rag").

By the time of their second EP in 1966, though, they had plunged full-tilt
into the burgeoning psychedelic sound, with raga-ish, heavily distorted
guitars and farfisa organ, displayed to its full glory on the instrumental
"Section 43." Versions of songs from those limited edition EPs were combined

with other material for their first and best album, Electric Music for the
Mind and Body. McDonald and his group combined protest politics, free love,
and psychedelic drugs with a good-time humor on this 1967 release. After
a similar, less impressive follow-up, the band began to disintegrate, and
never recaptured the highs of their early days. McDonald went on to an
intermittently successful, more folk-rock oriented solo career, achieving
his greatest moment of notoriety with his version of "Fixin'-to-Die"
(complete with the obscene "Fish Cheer") at the Woodstock festival.

Country Joe is great music for our time - even if it is a bit dated
sounding.
Just got "Electric Music for the Mind and Body" . "Super Bird" could be
about
GW just change the names. "It's a bird it's a plane , it's a man
insane...send
you back to Texas - make you work on your ranch...
Some good psychedelic jams too !
