SET LIST -
(totally off the top of my head - I am sure I am
missing something and one song I didn't know!)

DANCING BAREFOOT
REDONDO BEACH
FREE MONEY
SOUTHERN CROSS
BECAUSE THE NIGHT
Anti Iraq speech followed by Song I didn't know
ROCK N' ROLL NIGGER
PEOPLE HAVE THE POWER
GLORIA

Patti did a great job - sounded great - looked great -
band sounded great - Tom Verlaine with with them.
Multi camera video on huge screens towering above
their heads.

Very little talking they played a straight set moving
from song to song quickly.

A lukewarm reception however - U2's audience is too
white and too male. (no joke - 26,000 people and i
swear there was not a single black or gay person in
the house).

I knew Patti was in trouble when:

1) She started her set and the Garden was only about
40% full.

2) During Free Money - the entire floor pit was
motionless, not a soul was dancing or bopping up and
down.

3) During Because the Night a girl behind me said -
why's she doing that song by Natalie Merchant?

4) The short anti-war in Iraq speech caused the
ENTIRE audience to boo her(the irony of course was
Bono's saying something similar later without
mentioning Iraq was cheered...)

5) Patti's volume was only about two-thirds as loud
as U2's would be.

6) She messed up the lyrics at the end of People Have
the Power
(endearing to us - not so to U2's crowd) - Patti then
said something about sorry she was hypnotized! The
only flub of the night.

7) Other than the booing over the Iraq thing - the
biggest response Patti got was during Rock n Roll
Nigger when she broke out into the lyrics from Vertigo
(amusing because later Bono would break out into
lyrics from Rock n Roll Nigger when HE was singing
Vertigo)

And I give Bono a big shout out - after a few songs
into their set he told the audience how honored U2 was
to have Patti Smith on the stage and how important she
and Tom Verlaine were to them in Dublin in the late
70's.

Seriously Patti and the band DID do great - - - -

I just wish more of you were there :)
