Completely new to this. So you're saying that if I play a Sony cd on my
computer it infects my computer?

Kind of. It installs software without your consent (or, on Macs, prompts you to install such software) in such a way that it leaves your system vulnerable to certain known attacks. But that's not the really fun part. The really fun part is that the "fix" offered by Sony leaves your machine in even worse shape.

As I understand it, it also connects with Sony and informs them what you're playing, how often etc. And the installation prompt - even if you say "NO", it installs itself anyway, because let's face it, those nice people at Sony know better than you what you should be doing on your computer.

All the stuff at boingboing is really worth reading, including the link to the list of CDs which definitely have this delightful feature.
