RE: (TV) David / Byrds

As Black Monk said, it was McGuinn and session guys (including Hal Blaine
and Leon Russell!) on the "Tambourine Man" single only. According to Johnny
Rogan's excellent, comprehensive and weighty (I'm not kidding, I have
guitars that are lighter) "Timeless Flight," Columbia's game plan was to
sign McGuinn, Clark and Crosby only as singers and augment them with studio
cats for recording, until the band put their collective foot down -
something that just wasn't done at the time, but they got away with it. And
I consider David Crosby to be one of the best rhythm guitarists, period.
Listen to what he does behind the solo on "Feel a Whole Lot Better," or on
"Why" when the band's just hanging on a D chord for the solo sections. Now
setting "gush" mode to "off."
