Here's why I agree: because while Tom's solo work is not that well known,
it's still the standard against which these records should be judged. Now,
when the new Stones record comes out, the reviews don't bother to say it's
not as good as "Exile on Main Street". They say "it's better than the last
really successful record they put out four years ago that everybody bought
but nobody listens to any more". But everybody's at least heard some recent
Stones and has some idea what the measuring stick is. Not that many people
have heard Verlaine's solo records, knowing only that they are "not
Televsion", and this person classifies that as bad by definition.

It's not useful to compare the new record to something produced at a
completely different point in an artist's career, and implicit in this guy's
critique is that none of Verlaine's post-Television work has been worthy.
So no, not the right guy to review the records on that level. Otherwise
entitled to his opinion and the publication thereof.
