well casey, i think you meant for this to be off-list,
but here we are...

am about halfway through w/ the book so far. starts
w/ a nice thank you to keith, phil and multiple
listers here, btw.

i think mitchell has done a thorough job of putting
this together, limited though he was to seconary
sources. he references a huge number of old
interviews that i've never seen, and pulled some good
quotes. while seeming partial to hell (i had never
seriously appreciated hell's singing, but now that you
mention it...), he seems to give a fair shake to tom.
the obsessive-compulsives on this list (not me)
might've already known all this, but i've read quite a
bit i didn't know.

he also gives a fair shake to patti smith, who has
shown up poorly in other histories. i was surprised
to see how the patti / tom romance was related --
something much more involved than i had thought it
was.

also, a fuller picture than i had before of terry
ork's role.

on the downside -- where was nancy elgin?! needed a
copy editor. and, not much to offer in the photo
sections (lots of album / cd cover scans). there are
a couple of really good roberta bayleys.

loved ny. what impression do others have of the book?
 i gotta run -- housetraining a dog...

r
